Regional Spotlight: Brother of The Month

CM WashingtonOn December 1, 2009, Brother Charles M. Washington assumed the administrative and operational leadership of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center’s Proton Therapy Center.  As the Director of Proton Therapy Services and Operations. Charles works with executive leadership and physician faculty to provide direction for the three year old center’s clinical treatment delivery operations.  This includes oversight of radiation therapy services, medical dosimetry services, nursing and patient care services, physics support and operations, and patient triage and intake.  The center currently treats over 100 patients a day with it’s state-of-the-art technology.

Charles began his career with M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in the Division of Radiation Oncology in 1987 and has provided valuable leadership and direction in the Division’s clinical operations on several levels.  He has served patients and the institution as a radiation therapist, Clinical Supervisor, Director of Radiation Therapy Education, Administrative Director of Radiation Therapy Services, and as Director of Clinical Services and Operations.  He served on several institutional committees including the Institution’s Diversity Council, of which he served as a charter member and Chairman of the Governance Committee, and the Patient Safety Committee.  

Charles has served two full terms on the Board of Trustees of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and is currently a Board of Trustee member of the American Board of Imaging Informatics, an organization that provides national certification for imaging informatics (PACS) managers.

Charles has written professional peer reviewed articles in the Radiation Therapist journal as well and The International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, and Physics.  Charles is co-editor and author of the Principles and Practice of Radiation Therapy textbook series by Mosby; the third edition of the work was released in January 2009.   

Fraternally, Charles was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. by way of Alpha Upsilon Chapter at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan on April 23, 1982,   Charles is currently a member of Xi Kappa Lambda Chapter in Missouri City, Texas.  Last year he was recognized by his chapter and TCAC as Alumni Brother of the Year.  Charles currently serves as his chapter’s Associate Editor to the Sphinx and as Chairman of the Southwest Region’s Health and Wellness Commission.
